Hiking 101: Top 10 Things You Need For A Hike

By Maura April 28, 2017

Now that we’re deep into the summer months, I’ve been getting my hiking gear ready for some outdoor adventures! My family and I always go on a hike right at the beginning of summer. It’s one of our favorite things to do together, and we’ve already hiked a bunch of trails!

Map

I always like to have a real-life, physical map because phones in the forrest or on the desert aren’t the most reliable. It also helps to look at your map before the hike and plan out where exactly you’re going so you don’t run into any issues during the hike.

Sunscreen

I don’t think I have to tell you how important sunscreen is. I always make sure to use a different sunscreen for my body and my face because I like to get a sunscreen made for the face because my face is a little sensitive.

Flashlight

You definitely want to bring a flashlight. I like this little one from REI because it works well and fits nicely in your backpack without weighing too much.

Warm Clothing

Even thought the months are getting warmer, it’s important to wear layers when you go hiking. You want to wear hiking boots, long pants, and layers of shirts. You should also pack a lightweight jacket.

Sunglasses

This doesn’t take much explaining, but you definitely always want to wear a good pair of sunglasses that will protect your eyes from the sun.

First Aid Kit

Anything can happen in nature so, packing a first aid kit is key to having a safe hike. This kit is great because it’s small, but includes the essentials.

Matches

Again, anything can happen on a hike so you want to have matches on you in case you need to start a fire to keep warm. Depending on where you are, a hike could get very cold very fast.

Food

This is an obvious essential. It’s important to keep your energy up throughout any hike. That’s the only way you’ll keep feeling motivated and healthy after walking for so long.

Water

Just as important as food is water. Keeping up your hydration is the most important thing to remember while hiking. I like this water bottle – it comes in so many bright colors and holds a lot of water!

Bug Spray

Depending on the environment you’re walking through, you’re going to come across a million different bugs. So, it’s important to bring bug spray and spray it on your skin and your clothes.
